Ashley Hans Scheirl
Ashley Hans Scheirl (born 1956) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Between 1959 and 1996, she made over 50 Super 8 short films. In 1981–82, Scheirl lived in New York and worked at the off-space Wednesdays @ A's. In 1987, she moved to London for 16 years, receiving her M.A. from Central St. Martins College of Art (painting/installation) in 2003. From 2006–2022, Scheirl was Professor for Contextual Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, where she has held the position of Senior Professor since 2022. In 2022, together with Jakob Lena Knebl, Scheirl represented Austria at the Venice Biennale. She has received prizes including the 2006 Austrian State Stipend for Visual Arts (Österreichisches Staatsstipendium für Bildende Kunst), the 2012 Art Prize of the City of Vienna (Kunstpreis der Stadt Wien), and the 2019 Austrian Prize for Visual Arts from the Federal Chancellory (Österreichischer Preis für Bildende Kunst des Bundeskanzleramts).In future, selected films (in full and/or in excerpts) will be compiled in consultation with Ashley Hans Scheirl and exhibited here for a certain period of time.
Digitization (2K) of 47 films (1979 to 1996) by Ashley Hans Scheirl based on reversal originals and positive prints from the Austrian Film Museum, "Kontakt Sammlung" of Erste Stiftung, and sixpackfilm.
