Library
The Film Museum's Library is the most comprehensive and most detailed public film library in Austria. It holds about 29.000 books and over 400 magazine titles covering a broad range of film-related topics. Due to our new acquisitions the library allows our users for getting acquainted with the current debate on film.
The Film Museum has been collecting publications in various languages on film history, theory, technology, about all kinds of genres, filmmakers and individual films. The library also includes a large number of brochures, often related to film events, which had a limited circulation when first published.
In the book catalogue is available online as well as in the library. You can search for titles, genres, persons, authors and keywords. The newest publications are regularly acquired and catalogued immediately.
An important part of the library are the film magazines such as Cahiers du Cinéma, Positif, Film Comment, Film Culture, Film Quarterly, Variety, Sight and Sound, Filmkritik and many more – from Cuba to Russia, from Andy Warhol's Interview to Austrian film magazines. The Periodicals Collection also includes a rich selection of early American Periodicals from 1908 to 1935 and several titles that existed for short periods only but had a strong influence on film historiography, such as Close Up (1927–33), Experimental Film (1930–34), La Revue du Cinéma (1946–49), Film (1963–71), Kintop (1992–2005) or cinéma (2001–07).
