Gustav Deutsch
Gustav Deutsch (1952–2019) was an artist, architect, and a leading figure of international found-footage cinema. In his elaborate, poetic "remixes" of film history, genres collide – fiction and documentary, magic fables and newsreels, amateur cinema and scientific films, conceptual art, and objet trouvé. Although Deutsch's works have a subtle sense of humor, selection and montage of the found material, he was not interested in ironic ironic effects, but rather a sensual understanding of the medium and an artistic exploration of the relationship between film, history, and society. The most important accomplice in this endeavor was the painter, graphic artist, and photographer Hanna Schimek. This artistic partnership, which spanned decades, and their shared interest in "Gesamtkultur" is reflected in the cinematic collaborations and individual works of both artists, which are kept in the Austrian Film Museum.Digitization (2K) of 63 short films (1982-2003) by Gustav Deutsch and Hanna Schimek based on reversal originals, negatives, and positive prints. Funded by the Federal Ministry for Arts, Culture, the Civil Service and Sport (BMKOES) as part of the "Kulturerbe digital" funding program.
