Collection on Screen:
Michael Pilz – Part 4
April 7, 2024
In spring 2023, we presented a selection of works by Austrian gem Michal Pilz (born in 1943) whose films are preserved at the Austrian Film Museum. In small steps and as part of our monthly series Collection of Screen, we will extend this retrospective, this time with Across the River (1997/2005).
Location: the Tonga village Siachilaba in Zimbabwe. As usual: Michael Pilz and his camera are omnipresent and invisible, but also telling a story that begins almost casually only to accelerate more and more: As part of a cultural exchange program, a group of musicians from Austria spends four days visiting the village to meet old masters of Tonga music and learning their current practices for playing music. (Birgit Flos / Translation: Ted Fendt)
