Amos Vogel Library
Amos Vogel (1921–2012) war eine der bedeutendsten Persönlichkeiten der internationalen Filmkultur. Er war Gründer und Kurator von Cinema 16 (1947–1963), dem größten Filmclub der USA mit Schwerpunkt auf unabhängigen Film; Gründungsdirektor des New York Film Festival (1963–1968) mit Fokus auf zeitgenössische Avantgarde; Essayist und Autor des filmtheoretischen Standardwerks Film als subversive Kunst (1974); Professor für Film Studies an der Annenberg School for Communication der University of Pennsylvania; Vortragender, Kritiker und Berater bei zahlreichen internationalen Filmfestivals.
Seine Söhne Steven und Loring Vogel traten an Alexander Horwath, den damaligen Direktor des Österreichischen Filmmuseums mit dem Vorschlag heran, die Bibliothek nach Wien an den Geburtsort ihres Gründers zurückzubringen. Das Filmmuseum freut sich, die Amos Vogel Library nun der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich zu machen und damit neue Einblicke in die Denk- und Arbeitsweisen dieses ebenso bedeutsamen wie subversiven Pioniers der Filmkultur zu ermöglichen.

Amos Vogel (1921–2012) was one of the most important personalities of American film culture. Born in Vienna, Austria and forced into exile as a Jew in 1938 he later became the founder and curator of Cinema 16 (1947–1963), the largest film club in the U.S.A. focusing on independent cinema; founding director of the New York Film Festival (1963–1968) focusing on contemporary avant-garde; and the author of the influential volume Film as a Subversive Art (1974); professor of film studies at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania; lecturer, critic, and consultant at numerous international film festivals.
In 2013 Amos Vogel's personal library was returned to Vienna, the birthplace of its founder, by his sons. Now, the Austrian Film Museum is pleased to make the Amos Vogel Library accessible to the public, thus providing new insights into the ways of thinking and working of this significant and subversive pioneer of film culture.
