"Points de départ," a conversation between Robert Kramer and Bernard Eisenschitz, was published in French in 2001. Along with three essays by Kramer, it is now appearing in the original English under the title Starting Places to coincide with the Retrospective. Eisenschitz and editor Volker Pantenburg's presentation of the book will be framed by two short films by Robert Kramer on the past and future of cinema: commissioned by the French Ministry of Culture, Sous le vent drifts along with the waves of the Seine. Like the Allies almost fifty years earlier, Kramer lands on the coast of Normandy and continues upriver towards Paris, stopping at cinema locations and talking with cinema people like Serge Daney. Ghosts of Electricity also testifies to Kramer's delight in interpreting commissions as self-imposed work assignments. He created this vision of the cinema of tomorrow for the 50th anniversary of the Locarno Film Festival. (V.P.)
