Museum of Modern Art, New York:
"Vienna Unveiled"
Retrospective (February 27 to April 20, 2014)
The New York Museum of Modern Art celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Austrian Film Museum with a major collaborative exhibition. Vienna Unveiled: A City in Cinema explores Vienna as cinematographic topos: a city both real and mythic. With significant contributions from the Filmarchiv Austria and other archives, the retrospective presents both international and Austrian productions, many of the former created by Austrian and German Jewish émigrés looking back on the city they left behind. It also includes an array of contemporary filmmakers whose own visions of Vienna reveal the powerful hold the city continues to exert over our collective unconscious.
Spanning the late 19th to the early 21st centuries, from historical and romanticized images of the Austro-Hungarian empire to noir-tinged Cold War narratives, and from a breeding ground of Anti-Semitism and European Fascism to present-day Vienna as a center of artistic experimentation and socioeconomic stability, the exhibition features masterworks and rediscoveries of fiction and nonfiction, as well as a rich selection of newsreels and actualités, avant-garde films, and home movies.
The retrospective consists of 65 films and its list of artists runs from Hitchcock to Haneke, from Kubrick to Kren, from Ophüls to Ottinger. It also includes works by Barbara Albert, Ruth Beckermann, Ludwig Berger, August Blom, Jem Cohen, John Cook, John Cromwell, Gustav Deutsch, VALIE EXPORT, Jacques Feyder, Paul Fejos, Willi Forst, Sidney Franklin, Michael Glawogger, Michaela Grill & Martin Siewert, Benjamin Heisenberg, Leopold Lindtberg, Richard Linklater, Ernst Lubitsch, Franz Novotny, Peter Patzak, Lisl Ponger, Jakov Posel'skij, Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger, Otto Preminger, Carol Reed, Walter Reisch, Nicolas Roeg, Johannes Rosenberger, Hans Scheugl, Ernst Schmidt Jr., Ulrich Seidl, Josef von Sternberg, Erich von Stroheim, Billy Wilder, and many others.
