American Cinema Restored: A Tribute to Martin Scorsese's Film Foundation
Film Museum Retrospective (December 2014 and January 2015)
As 2014 turns to 2015, the 50th anniversary of the Austrian Film Museum intersects with the 25th anniversary of The Film Foundation, founded in 1990 by Martin Scorsese, the Film Museum's Honorary President.
Scorsese built the foundation together with his most esteemed U.S. colleagues in order to provide financing for the preservation of American films in all their variety. In cooperation with the United States' most important film archives (including the Library of Congress, Academy Film Archive, Museum of Modern Art, UCLA Film & Television Archive, George Eastman House, Anthology Film Archives) nearly one thousand works have since been saved and restored.
In December 2014 and January 2015, the Austrian Film Museum pays tribute to the riches of American Cinema from the perspective of the Film Foundation and its activities over the past quarter century. The selection consists of 48 works in gloriously restored film prints, focusing on a period (1928 to 1963) known as the classical era of American cinema – and extending an invitation to examine and perhaps revise this notion of the "classical".
