In person: Don Siegel

Recording Date: (March 14, 1975)
Original Format: U-matic Low-Band

Initially written off as a "hack" director of B movies in the 1950s, American filmmaker Don Siegel (*1912; †1991) was later acclaimed by critics and audiences for his "hard boiled" thrillers such as Dirty Harry (1971). For the 1975 edition of the Viennale, the Film Museum honored Siegel with his first major retrospective. The footage of the press conference is the oldest surviving video recording preserved by the Film Museum. In this clip, Siegel responds in a manner reminiscent of one of his characters to the accusation that his specific brand of cinema doesn't match the tastes of the wider film-going public.
