Cinematic Mechanics

Age 9 to 12
The mechanics behind movies are mostly hidden from us. We see the moving images onscreen, but not their sources – the projector, the individual frames on the film strip and the soundtrack. And we are not aware of much of what we could see – different aspect ratios, changeovers between the individual reels, the size of the film strip, the projectionist's work. In this lecture, we will explore in small groups how movies work, the levers that move, and the hinges and knobs pushed when the cinematic machinery is turned on. (A.B.)
