Looking for the Real

Thinking about cinema's ability to document the world would have to start with the specific qualities of the medium: For the first time it allowed to record moving things and present them in movement. But the movement does not really happen on the screen but in our heads. Filmmakers have reflected upon this and other problems regarding the representation of the world in film from the beginning of cinema's history: The outcome ranges from a narrative appraoch such as Nanook of the North to the experimental appraoch of The Man with a Movie Camera or Direct Cinema's idea of capturing life unawares. All of these examples underline the complex relationship of film and reality.
