Lecture

From the Lumières to YouTube

Vienna in Unknown Film Documents

Age 14 plus
Film and the city stand in a close relationship, both are marked by fleetingness, fragmentation and velocity. Vienna became a protagonist in films as early as 1896, in the films by the Lumières. The lecture will focus on unknown film documents – newsreels, amateur-, and industrialfilms as well as advertising – which portray the city beyond its stereotypes of cabs, the Stephansdom and the Heldenplatz. Images of the city from cinema's early days, amateurfilms from the 1930s and 40s, documents of teen-subculture, films by Hans Scheugl and Kurt Kren as well as youtube videos will be contrasted with Vienna's more popular images. Thus an alternative image of Vienna will become visible, emphasizing the value of ephemeral documents and drawing a line from early films to YouTube.

Presented by historian Marie-Noëlle Yazdanpanah and film historian Karin Fest
