Lecture
Time Machine
Cinema as a Temporal Experience
André Bazin called film "the mummy of change". Unlike any other medium before it film is able to record and represent time through its technological apparatus. The early enthusiasm for this potential of film quickly transformed into an urge to manipulate time. Film cannot only represent time, it can expand and shorten, accelarate and slow down and fragment it or completely get rid of it and come back to a photographic still image. The lecture will present examples ranging from experimental film to Action-movies and analyse how time is made perceptible through the means of cinema.
